We’re delighted to welcome John Davis to Dalgety Bay Astronomy Club on 27th October, when he’ll be joining us to give a fascinating talk, “Mission To Main Belt Asteroids.”
John has had a remarkable career spanning astronomy, space science and aviation. He has worked at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, Leicester and Birmingham Universities, and spent several years in Hawaii supporting the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) on Mauna Kea.
His research has included comets and asteroids, and he was involved in the discovery of several new comets and asteroids, including 3200 Phaethon – the source of the annual Geminid meteor shower. In 2000, asteroid 9064 was named in his honour.
John has also been involved with major international astronomy projects including ROSAT, ISOCAM, OPTICON and ESA’s Rosetta mission, and remains actively involved in astronomy and outreach.
Join us on 27th October for what promises to be a fascinating journey into the world of main-belt asteroids and the missions that could one day explore them.
