Designed for nonprofit board members, executives, and emerging leaders, this course offers a balanced understanding of governance fundamentals. Participants will explore core board responsibilities, the distinction between governance and management, and practical practices that foster productive board engagement, shared accountability, and healthier board–executive relationships—grounded in leading practices and real-world nonprofit experience.
By the end of this course, participants will gain an understanding of:
- Core roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards (fiduciary oversight, strategic leadership, organizational accountability)
- Governance vs. management—and how appropriate board behaviors support effective leadership
- Characteristics of effective/ineffective boards and how board dynamics influence performance
- What supports a healthy, productive board–executive relationship (clarity, shared purpose, mutual accountability)
- Practical governance practices that support engagement, alignment, and long-term sustainability
