Mission Monday – Meet EJ
For the month of June, Mission Monday is honored to support EJ and his family.
EJ is an incredible 11-year-old whose strength, resilience, and kindness continue to inspire everyone around him. He loves building Legos, playing video games, riding his scooter, spending time at the park, and competing in darts and cornhole at the Transplant Games. He also loves playing Brawl Stars with his siblings and has a personality that lights up every room he enters.
His family lovingly describes him as “a 90-year-old man living in an 11-year-old’s body” because of how caring, wise, and compassionate he is toward others.
But behind EJ’s smile is a journey filled with unimaginable challenges.
EJ was born with only one kidney, and that kidney was severely damaged due to a blockage and multiple developmental complications. Throughout his childhood, he underwent numerous surgeries and procedures in hopes of preserving kidney function for as long as possible.
As doctors feared, EJ’s kidney function eventually began to fail, officially starting his transplant journey.
In 2021, EJ was listed for a kidney transplant. In February 2023, a donor match became available, but because his kidney function had temporarily stabilized, the donor selflessly donated to another child in EJ’s name through the donor exchange program.
Only a few months later, everything changed.
While enjoying Memorial Day weekend with family at the Jersey Shore in May 2023, EJ’s family received a devastating phone call after routine bloodwork revealed he was dangerously close to suffering a heart attack due to kidney failure. Though he appeared completely fine, he was rushed immediately to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where doctors worked to stabilize him.
Just weeks later, EJ began in-home dialysis.
For nine long months, EJ endured dialysis treatments while waiting for the call that could save his life.
On March 20, 2024, EJ finally received his kidney transplant.
Unfortunately, the journey became far more complicated than anyone expected.
Following transplant, EJ experienced severe complications including transplant failure, additional dialysis treatments, and time spent on a ventilator while doctors fought to save the kidney. During treatment, the family also learned EJ may have an allergy to blood products, adding even more complexity to his care.
After weeks of uncertainty and intensive treatment, EJ slowly began improving and was eventually able to come off dialysis.
More recently, medication changes caused severe dehydration and acute kidney injury, resulting in additional hospital stays and another decline in kidney function. Thankfully, after adjusting medications, his kidney function has improved once again, and the family continues hoping this transplanted kidney will continue holding on for as long as possible.
Despite everything he has endured, EJ remains positive, loving, and full of life.
His transplant journey has placed tremendous emotional, physical, and financial strain on the family, but they continue fighting beside him every single day with hope, faith, and determination.
This June, we invite our community to rally around EJ and his family through Mission Monday. Together, we can help ease the burden while honoring the incredible strength of transplant warriors and the life-saving power of organ donation.
Join us Monday, June 29, 2026, at Transplant Alliance Bingo in Pottstown as we come together for EJ.
