Miri Izenberg & Emmet Althoen
About this Event
Join us for an evening of jazz featuring Young Artists in Residence Miri Izenberg and Emmet Althoen, joined by their quartet, at The Sanctuary Studio.
Miri and Emmet have been invited by studio owner Simon Drew to present a series of performances in the lead-up to their university studies—an opportunity earned through their exceptional dedication to artistry, creative excellence, and the genuine support they’ve cultivated within their community.
Miri Izenberg, an acclaimed vocalist and trumpet player and a senior at the Orange County School of the Arts, performs in both jazz and classical ensembles and has received national recognition, including soloist awards from DownBeat Magazine and the Essentially Ellington Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Studying trumpet with John Reynolds and Willie Murillo and voice with Lia Booth, Miri draws inspiration from vocalists such as Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald, Jazzmeia Horn, and Cécile McLorin Salvant. Her original voice and deep musical sensitivity bring both warmth and sophistication to the bandstand.
Sharing the stage is Emmet Althoen, 15, a gifted pianist and member of OCSA’s Ambassador Jazz Orchestra under the direction of John Reynolds. Having studied with pianist Jeremy Siskind, Emmet brings a thoughtful balance of technical command and expressive improvisation, shaping music that is both nuanced and alive in the moment.
Joined by fellow young musicians in a quartet setting, Miri and Emmet expand their musical conversation through the interplay, spontaneity, and collaborative spirit that define great jazz. Together, these artists represent a rising generation of musicians committed not only to craft, but to the enduring tradition of creative expression and live performance.
