Ranae Holland is a research biologist, speaker, and writer exploring the intersection of science, curiosity, and conservation—with, of course, a healthy dose of humor. Her approach is simple: challenge the unknown, not by handing out answers, but by inviting others into scientific exploration. That perspective has been shaped in the field, where decades as a field biologist have included extraordinary experiences that science cannot yet fully explain, further strengthening her respect for Indigenous knowledge alongside the science she employs to understand the natural world.
She grew up on the rolling farmland of eastern South Dakota, where her curiosity showed up early—famously dissecting her Baby Alive doll at age five… the results were inconclusive. She went on to earn her degree from the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington and spent the next decade conducting fisheries research across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
Then, everything shifted.
While preparing for a beaver and trout ecology study in Oregon, she was approached to co-host the tv show Finding Bigfoot on Animal Planet where she became known as the Skeptical Scientist.
Today, with more than three decades of global fieldwork and speaking experience, she is recognized as a leader in restoration ecology, science communication, and the study of unexplained phenomena. Her research emphasizes a collaborative, evidence-based approach, including remote-sensing and long-term investigations across private, public, and Indigenous lands.
Driven by curiosity and a commitment to advancing citizen science as a tool for meaningful and transparent discovery, she integrates modern scientific methods, emerging technologies, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge to foster inclusive, community-based engagement and broaden our understanding of complex natural phenomena.
Through her work in both science and media, she shares stories from the field that connect people to place and community, inviting others into the process of discovery and sparking curiosity in the next generation of naturalists and scientists.
