For a few days only – you are invited to step into the story of plein air painting in Centre Wellington – where for over 150 years, artists have been inspired to create “in the open air,” capturing the ever-changing light and landscape in real time. From early influences dating back to the Renaissance to local pioneers like Thomas Connon, who documented the Elora Gorge in the 1860s, this mini exhibition brings history to life through images and storytelling.
Since the mid-1800s, the dramatic beauty of the Elora Gorge, Grand River, and surrounding countryside has drawn painters, photographers, and early documentarians alike. What began as a shift toward painting outdoors evolved into a defining artistic movement, emphasizing direct observation, atmosphere, and the fleeting qualities of nature – principles that continue to shape plein air practice today.
While you witness the Elora Plein Air Festival painting outdoors this May long weekend, stop into the gallery to discover the roots of this enduring artistic tradition. You just might catch a few outdoor painters on our property while you are here!
Admission to the gallery is free.
