Mingus Big Band performs exclusively the music of celebrated American composer/bassist/activist Charles Mingus. Sue Mingus created this 14-piece band to feature new arrangements of Mingus compositions in a larger band format that Mingus wanted, but was not always able to organize in his lifetime. The dynamic structure encourages deep explorations and ever-evolving ideations of Mingus’ Music and provides a platform for individual artistic expression, just as Mingus himself created in his Jazz Workshop projects and compositions.Drawing from a rotation of NYC’s best established and rising musicians, Mingus Big Band is one of the most spontaneous, creative bands in the world. Nominated for seven GRAMMY’s— most recently for The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions in 2022– and one win in 2011 for Live at Jazz Standard, the band continues to build its legacy with a continuation of the legendary Mingus Mondays residency at The Pocket.
For the best Monday in NYC, look no further.
