ilwaukie Bay Park Wheelchair Roll – A Smooth Waterfront Gem in Oregon ncprd.org
Hey everyone, Franklin here with another great roll for the Oregon Wheelchair Hiking crew. This one’s right in Milwaukie – easy access, flat paths, river views, and perfect for a relaxed morning or afternoon outing. No big elevation, no rough terrain, just good rolling with friends and fresh air along the Willamette River. ncprd.org
Quick Details
• Location: Milwaukie Bay Park (aka Riverfront Park / Jefferson St Boat Ramp), 1700 SE Jefferson St, Milwaukie, OR.
• Distance: 4 to 5+ mile out-and-back or loop on the main paths (easy to extend via connected trails like Kronberg Park or the Trolley Trail).
• Surface: Paved/wheelchair-accessible walking paths. Smooth and wide enough for side-by-side rolling. ncprd.org
• Grade: Mostly flat – very gentle if any slope near the water. Great for manual or power chairs.
• Restrooms: Accessible restroom onsite at the south end of the parking lot.
• Parking: Dedicated lot shared with the boat launch. Some spots for boat trailers, so arrive early or use nearby downtown Milwaukie parking if needed. Free. ncprd.org
• Best Time: Year-round, but lovely in spring/fall for milder temps and good light on the water. Opens half-hour before sunrise, closes half-hour after sunset.
The Roll
We meet up in the parking area and head out along the paved paths that hug the Willamette River. You’ll feel that classic Oregon waterfront vibe right away – open lawns, picnic tables, and wide views across the bay where the river opens up. It’s a peaceful spot with boats launching nearby, birds on the water, and that nice mix of urban edge and nature.
Roll south or north along the path for scenic stretches. The paths are well-maintained and give you room to chat and enjoy the views without worrying about bumps or roots. Look for connections to Kellogg Creek areas or the Trolley Trail for longer options if the group wants to keep rolling – those links add more green space and even some public art. pdxwomenwhowalk.com
It’s stroller-friendly too, so families or anyone with wheels are welcome. Leashed dogs are okay – just keep ’em close and clean up.
Accessibility Notes
• accessible paths confirmed.
• Restroom accessible.
• River access has some steps down from the main park area but the upper paths give excellent views without needing to drop down.
• Bring layers – river breeze can pick up. Sunscreen or rain gear depending on the forecast.
• Transit-friendly: Milwaukie has good bus options for those using TriMet.
This is a low-key winner for building community, getting outside, and enjoying a beautiful slice of the Portland metro area without driving far. Perfect for new folks or anyone wanting an easy day. Pack a snack, bring your camera for those river shots, and let’s roll!
Who’s in? See you at the trailhead – keep rolling, friends! 🚀
