Huldah Niles, Erika Hoogeveen, violins, Coca Bochonko, viola, Rebeccah Parker Downs, cello. "Between Worlds: Jazz, Romance, & Reverence" is an eclectic and captivating concert featuring works by Wynton Marsalis, Anton Webern, and Caroline Shaw. From jazz-inspired rhythms to sweeping romanticism and echoes of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, this program offers a rich tapestry of sound and style. With something for every musical taste, it’s the perfect way to welcome the beauty and renewal of spring! The performers in the Mill City String Quartet are Huldah Niles and Erika Hoogeveen, violins, Coca Bochonko, viola, and Rebeccah Parker Downs, cello. Established in 2007, Mill City String Quartet (MCSQ) is an internationally prize-winning chamber ensemble based in the Twin Cities. Their mission is to cultivate "transformative concerts that promote underrepresented composers and celebrate the classical music genre." MCSQ recently won First Prize in the Fanny Mendelssohn International Competition, the Charleston International Music Competition, and International Schubert Competition, Vienna. They perform widely in Minnesota, and have also appeared in Iowa, Florida, and Oregon.
In a first for the Coffee Concert series, the concert will be preceded by an "opening act," Aetherium Trio, comprised of exceptional young area musicians Cecilia Taggart (piano, 13), Josie Snaza (violin, 13), and Lilia Smith (cello, 16). They will play two pieces by Beethoven and Arensky starting at 1:35 before the 2:00 Mill City String Quartet performance. Formed in 2025, the ensemble has been mentored by renowned cellist and educator Tom Rosenberg. We're really excited to give these young performers a venue and spotlight. These teenagers have already established themselves as delightful forces to be reckoned with!
Along with the great music, some extra treats accompany this season finale concert including festive reception food, door prizes, and the announcement of our 2027 season.
