A New York-born woodwind master mentored by the man behind the "Honky Tonk" sax solo — six solo albums and a lifetime of stories.
About this Event

Mikole Kaar's resume reads like a tour through American music history. Born in New York City, he picked up the clarinet at nine and had his first song on the charts at thirteen with the rock and roll band The Mod Caps. As a teenager he opened shows for Billy Joel's band The Hassles and The Young Rascals. And he learned at the side of a legend: tenor saxophonist Clifford Scott — the man who played the solo on Bill Doggett's "Honky Tonk," one of the most influential R&B sax solos ever recorded — mentored the young musician Kaar knew simply as "Scotty," while King Curtis and Junior Walker lit the path ahead.

The decades since have taken him around the world: touring Europe, recording his debut album in Germany, playing Hong Kong and Shanghai, and working stages and sessions with The Temptations, Joe Cocker, Bo Diddley, The Drifters, The Coasters, and The Platters. You've heard him even if you don't know it — that's Kaar playing "Yakety Yak" on the soundtrack of the 1988 hit Twins. Along the way he's released six solo albums, most recently Turning East, recorded with bassist Henry "The Skipper" Franklin.

And the instruments — tenor and soprano sax, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, piano. His album Six Horn Strut features him on six different reeds. After years anchoring a beloved weekly jam session in the Palm Springs desert, Kaar brought his sound home to Kansas City, and the 18th & Vine district has embraced him. Saturday night he takes the Blue Room stage with the Kaar Club Band — soulful, authentic, and deep in the pocket.
