Migration and Transnational Ties between Italy and Scotland

Held by Elisa Segnini, senior lecture and researcher at the University of Glasgow, and Eleanor Baughan, this talk explores the historical and contemporary migration flows between Italy and Scotland, examining how individuals and families have built vibrant communities while maintaining strong connections across national boundaries. From the significant waves of Italian migration to Scotland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to present-day mobility within Europe, these movements have created dynamic transnational networks that link local experiences to global contexts.

The conference will investigate how migrants established businesses, cultural associations, religious institutions, and social networks that contributed to Scotland’s economic and cultural life, while also preserving elements of Italian identity. It will address themes such as belonging, integration, entrepreneurship, intergenerational identity, language, and memory

The talk seeks to foster dialogue on how migrant communities build bridges between nations, creating hybrid identities and enriching both societies in the process.
