Midlife Hikers walk from Gribdale Gate to Clay Bank (Cleveland Way section 7)

The seventh section of our summer long distance walk, the Cleveland Way. We start with a climb up to the impressive spire of Captain Cook's Monument, where we will be rewarded with impressive views all around. After a short section in woodland, we drop down to Kildale, and then we have a long, steady climb up onto the Cleveland Moors. We then follow the edge of the escarpment for the rest of the day, with contrasting views over the Vale of York and towards the Yorkshire Dales to our right, and over the moorland to our left. This takes us over Round Hill, the highest point on the North Yorkshire Moors, and the mystical Hand and Face stones.
🥾 This section is on good paths and tracks. There are some long ascents but the only really steep bit is the final descent down to Clay Bank.
☀️ Most of the walk is on open, exposed terrain with little shade or shelter, so please come suitably prepared for the weather.

🅿️ Meet at 10:00 at Clay Bank car park, on the B1257, at the Ingleby Greenhow turn. (If you're coming from the Stokesley side, be careful because it's a sharp turn into the car park and there isn't much advance warning). We will then take some cars to the start of the walk at Gribdale Gate, and walk back to Clay Bank. We will then need volunteers to get people who drove to Gribdale Gate back to their cars, so please be prepared to offer others a lift at the start or end of the day.
Clay Bank is a pay & display car park, but don't pay for parking until we have agreed who is driving to Gribdale Gate.
🚌 Moorsbus M3/M4 from Stockton (08:36), Middlesbrough (08:49) and Guisborough (09:14) to Clay Bank – return journey at 18:04
🚻 Public toilets at Kildale, which is about 2½ miles into the walk
🥪 You will need to bring a packed lunch
🐶 Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times. You must arrange beforehand with someone else to give you and your dog a lift to the start of the walk
Midlife Hikers is a Ramblers group for people in their 40s and 50s, and our walks are led by volunteers. Non-members are welcome to try us out for free for up to 3 walks but then we ask you to join the Ramblers.
