Michigan During the World Wars

From building sub-chasers for World War I to its sons accepting the surrender of the Philippines from the Japanese in World War II, Michigan made important contributions to both conflicts. Please join St. Clair County Community College history instructor Ryan P. Johnson for an exploration of Michigan history in the first half of the 20th century. Mr. Johnson will dive into the early industrialization that set the stage for the state's role in the First World War and as part of the arsenal of democracy during WWII. Industrialization also led to demographic changes in some of Michigan's largest cities, sparking racial tensions in the 1940s. Additionally, soldiers from Michigan distinguished themselves during both conflicts, especially the 32nd Infantry Division "Red Arrows," which earned numerous commendations for valor.

Ryan Johnson has been teaching Western Civilization I and II at St. Clair County Community College for the past 15 years. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in history from Saginaw Valley State University, a Master's degree in history from Oakland University, and recently completed a Master's degree in higher education administration from Michigan State University.
