I've spent my entire life in close proximity to this place, and its musical legacy is buried deep inside me. As a high schooler, I saw my teacher, Bess Bonnier, play solo piano at Baker's Keyboard Lounge. She played her boogie woogie version of Giant Steps and lit the stage on fire. As a college student, I saw my next teacher, Geri Allen, play a solo piano concert at University of Michigan where she performed live to a film by Carrie Mae Weems, previewing the music that would eventually become her "Flying Toward the Sound" album. Prof. Allen elevated us all to the clouds that day. She invoked a call-and-response not just through space but through time -- backwards, forwards, and in the in-between.
So when I say that this concert has been a long time coming, this concert has been a long time coming. The piano is a mountain. I'm still climbing it. I'll be climbing it for the rest of my life. But as a Detroiter and a life-long devotée of the music and subscriber to the culture, this concert is my humble offering back to it. I hope to see you there; let's play music together/for/with/beyond each other and keep this earth spinning for as long as possible.
