The Numismatic Society of Ireland (Northern Branch), together with National Museums NI, are pleased to present an afternoon of free public lectures inspired by the life of Michael Dolley as celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Born in Oxford, Michael Dolley (1925–1983) was a renowned numismatist and historian, particularly known for his work on Anglo-Saxon, Irish, and Manx coins.
He not only excelled in coin identifiation, but also advanced the study of coins in their context and coin hoards, leading the way in integrating numismatics with archaeology and history.
Over his career he held a number of prestigious positions at institutions including the British Museum and Queen’s University Belfast, where he became Professor of Historical Numismatics.
