Michael Breggar is one very creative and funny guy. He is Philly born and bred, but has acquired an international reputation…and a good one at that. He has been the author/editor of the Auto Magic Column in The Linking Ring magazine for the last ten years. Mike has written and published seven books including Expert at the Cod Table and Raiders of the Lost Card. You might surmise that his magic has a humorous bent, and you’d be right. These books contain some very clever, devious and great magic, plus they are really fun reads. Several of his effects, like Flat Dice, PSI-Roller and Art Attack, have had international releases by several dealer/manufacturers.
Now, H&R Magic Books has published Mike’s latest tome, Know Brainer. This is a MAJOR WORK! It is a hardbound edition of 471 pages about mentalism with a comedy bent. There is material for close-up, parlor and stand-up performers. This is not a book of magicians magic, but full routines that have been designed to entertain lay audiences. This is not “heavy mental”, but light hearted routines suitable for mentalists, but especially magicians who want to add some mental flavored material to their shows. There is an incredible variety of routines with some very interesting “props”. The best part is, you don’t need to buy magic props to do this stuff. Some of it is with things from the Dollar Store, things you have around the house or things you will print out on your computer. Plus, there are some explorations of techniques and principles that will allow you to design your own routines.
Now, here’s the deal. Mike is a friend (to many of us) and I think this book deserves a big splashy Hollywood Style launch. Well, he’s not getting it. This is Glenside, PA on a Thursday night. No spotlights or red carpets. At these prices you get some soft drinks and pretzels.
