Introduction to Metal Thread Embroidery - improvers workshop, with embroidery artist Becky Hogg.
The 'Strawberry Thief' pattern was first produced in 1883 and was inspired by William Morris’s observation of the thrushes creeping under the strawberry nets to steal the fruit in the garden of his Oxfordshire home, Kelmscott Manor. It remains one of his most popular designs today.
Now you can have your own little piece of the pattern in the form of a Strawberry brooch or decoration made with delicious metal threads in red, gold, pink and blue.
This is the perfect project if you are new to this technique as it's manageable and compact. However, don't worry if you don't complete it in the lesson as you will be equipped with all the materials and an instruction booklet to complete at home.
This is a 5 hour workshop from 10.30am - 4.30pm with a hour lunch break in the middle. We'll have tea and coffee and biscuits available all day. For lunch there are plenty of places around Old Town - a couple of lovely pubs or there’s Waitrose and 2 beautiful parks for a picnic. If the weather's not great, you're welcome to bring food to the studio. We might be able to provide lunch options - we’ll email nearer the time if we can offer this.
You must already be able to embroider to attend this workshop. This is an introduction workshop to the metal thread technique.
What you'll learn
In this metal thread embroidery project you will learn stitches including Couching (to sew over the metal thread), Cutwork loops (cutting and sewing through a fine spring of metal) and Pearl purl edges. The strawberry is then finished off with 3D silk purl leaves in the blue of the original print. Once complete, the embroidery can be cut out, backed and made into a decorative hanging or brooch measuring approximately 3.5 x 5.5cm.
What you'll get
Kit includes – Wooden hoop, Calico, Sewing threads, Vilene, Brooch pin, Red Passing thread, Gold Pearl purl, Soft pink purl, Gold wire check purl and needles, all packaged in a stylish hand screen printed gift box to keep everything safe.

Embroidery scissors (if you have a pair, we'll also have spares in the studio)
Your tutor - Becky Hogg
Becky is an accomplished embroidery artist and experienced tutor with over 20 years as a professional hand embroiderer. As a Royal College of Needle Work tutor and professional embroidery artist her notable projects have included, embroidery for the Royal Opera House, lace appliqué for HRH Catherine, Princess of Wales' wedding dress, projects for Gilbert and George and Alexander McQueen as well as kits for the V & A Museum.
She now works freelance from her studio in Hastings creating embroidery kits which bring together her love of nature and metal thread embroidery. Becky also teaches online and in person classes.
