Mental Health: Resilience by Design
Resilience is usually spoken about as something a person either has or lacks. The more interesting question is whether it can be deliberately built — and if so, how.
This event brings together two researchers working at the edge of that question.
Dr Mel McKendrick is a Chartered Experimental Psychologist and Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University, where she leads the Mental Illness and Neuro Digital (MIND) health lab. Her work uses virtual, augmented and mixed reality to identify illness patterns across the lifespan, from developmental disorders through to neurodegenerative disease, with the aim of earlier diagnosis and more personalised treatment. Her flagship EU-funded SMILE project builds resilience in adolescents through a serious game based on cognitive behavioural coaching.
Dr Colle brings a discussion on robotics and non invasive sensor technologies, designed to fit into the environment, so that those in reciept of care do not feel like they are being observed - but the unique data captured allows staff to risk assess more confidently, know when to intervene and when to respect privacy and independence. The way forward in social care - how can technology help us become smarter at caring, reduce human led interventions and promote recovery.
Together they will look at what immersive and digital technologies genuinely offer mental health practice, where the evidence is still thin, and what it would take to move these tools from the research lab into everyday care.
