-There will be a support person trained in MHFA with us the entire time. They can provide extra support should you need it anytime during the training.
-Let at least one support person know you are taking the training and asking them to be available should you need to debrief about the training as the content can be heavy for some and we all come to the training with different life experiences.
-Your instructor will remain in the room for 30 minutes after the course ends to provide extra support answer questions or debrief should you need it.
-If you need special accommodations to make the learning experience better for you please don't hesitate to reach out.
ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
"Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that one in every five Canadians experiences a mental health problem within a given year. While we often know a lot about physical illness there tends to be less knowledge about mental health or substance use problems. This lack of understanding leads to fear and negative attitudes towards individuals living with these problems. It prevents people from seeking help for themselves and from providing appropriate support to people around them" - MHCC
MHFA is an international program active in over 20 countries. Research has shown that this evidence-based course offers significant positive impacts for participants and their workplaces communities and families namely:
- Significantly greater recognition of the most common mental health problems
- Decreased social distance from people with mental health problems
- Increased confidence in providing help to others
- Improved mental health of the MHFA participant her/himself - MHCC
