Mending Hearts: Multidisciplinary Approach for Patient's with Cardiac Issue

Course Description

This multi-disciplinary course will provide information for those involved in the care and rehabilitation of patients with significant cardiovascular disease processes. Information gained from this course will be of use to occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech language pathologists, recreational therapists, and nursing professionals. The course aims to empower professionals with knowledge and understanding of the medical management of a patient with various cardiovascular disease process such as aortic stenosis/ regurgitation, interventions, and different treatment options. Professionals will learn about various medications and intravenous lines utilized in the acute care setting. Attendees will learn how to increase patient’s occupational performance by utilizing energy conservation strategies and techniques to support transition to the home environment. Survivors of cardiac events will be present to share their journey on their road to recovery and adaptations they found helpful as they integrated back home and into the community. Their caregivers will also be present to discuss the caregiver role and need for adequate support systems during a lengthy hospitalization. Attendees will also learn ADL adaptive strategies and adaptive equipment to assist patients improve independence with their ADL and IADL routines. Physical and occupational therapists will demonstrate cardiac precautions following open heart surgery and identify appropriate treatment interventions for various type of cardiac impairments. Professionals will also discuss the role of cardiac rehab in the patient’s recovery. A dietician will discuss the importance of good nutrition in facilitating recovery and the rationale for adhering to a healthy heart diet.
