━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A free 6-week sewing course for women 🧵
Learn to mend, repair and reimagine the clothes you already own.
Over six warm, unhurried Tuesday afternoons, our tutor Sharron will guide you through the everyday skills that turn "the top I never wear" into something you reach for again. Basic hand stitches. Buttons that stay on. Hems that hold. Sewing machine basics. Simple alterations. Creative upcycling.
No previous experience needed. The group is intentionally small — just 8 places — so you get real one-to-one time with Sharron and get to know the other women in the group properly.
Where
📍 All-Souls Room, Southport Community Centre, Norwood Road, Southport PR8 6HQ
What we provide
· Basic materials (thread, needles, practice fabric)
· A couple of spare sewing machines if you don't have one
· Tea, coffee and biscuits
· All the expertise, patience and encouragement
What to bring
· Yourself — no experience needed
· Your own sewing machine if you have one — it's much better to learn on the machine you'll use at home
· A garment you'd like to mend, alter or upcycle (bring one to your first session so Sharron can help you plan what to work on across the course)
· A pair of fabric scissors if you have them (we have spares)
Who it's for
Women aged 18 and over. Whether you've never picked up a needle or you're brushing up on skills you learned long ago — you're very welcome.
What the course involves — please read before booking
Sewing is close-up hand work with small equipment (needles, pins, scissors, sewing machines).
To get the most out of the course, you'll ideally be able to:
· Use both hands together for fine tasks like threading needles and pinning fabric
· Sit and focus for up to 3 hours at a time, with informal breaks
· Take part in a small group setting (8 women in one room)
· Follow verbal and visual instruction.
Sharron is a dressmaking tutor with warmth and patience — she isn't a specialist support worker.
We can adapt pacing and offer help throughout, but we can't provide 1:1 personal care or dedicated accessibility support during sessions.
Unsure if it's right for you? Please email [email protected] before booking. We'd rather chat it through and find the right fit than have you booked into something that turns out not to work for you.
Venue accessibility
Southport Community Centre is on the ground floor with step-free access. If you have specific accessibility needs — mobility, sensory or otherwise — please email us ahead of the course so we can plan together.
About the wider project
The Stitch Workshops are part of Swish & Stitch, The Hearth Network's textile-reuse project. Learning to care for and repair the clothes you already own is one of the most powerful things any of us can do for the planet — and it's a genuine pleasure to learn.
Delivered by The Hearth Network CIC at Southport Community Centre. Funded by the Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority and Veolia through the Zero Waste Community Fund 2026–27.
