ABOUT
CU Maurice River was first alerted to an invasive plant on Menantico Creek by Rutgers Cooperative Extension in 2009. Dr. Gerry Moore confirmed its identification as parrot feather watermilfoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum) by comparing it with samples from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden herbarium. This is an aquatic W**d from South America that likely escaped someone’s backyard pond. It was mapped by CU Maurice River volunteers and then treated with herbicide by US Fish & Wildlife the following year. Last year, a resident living on the Menantico alerted us that the parrot feather has returned, and initial visual surveys indicate it has spread further outside the range found in 2009. We’re seeking volunteers interested in helping to GPS map the extent of the current population from visual assessments on land. A training session will be held on July 9th at the CU Maurice River office at 5:30 p.m. to go over the project and how you can get involved.
