Men in Mind: Clinical Strategies for Reaching, Engaging, and Supporting Men
About this Event
About This Event
Traditional clinical models often struggle to fully reach or engage male clients. For Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, More Than Therapy invites mental health professionals, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and community advocates to a specialized, interactive Lunch and Learn designed to sharpen your gender-responsive clinical toolkit.
Facilitated by veteran clinicians Aliedjawon B. Peoples and Felipe K. Blue, this advanced training goes beyond basic statistics to provide actionable, evidence-informed clinical strategies. Attendees will learn how to navigate traditional masculinity norms, restructure their biopsychosocial assessments, cut through resistance, and design environments that encourage male clients to stay engaged in the therapeutic process.
What’s Included?

Provided drinks and light refreshments.

Learning Objectives
By the conclusion of this 3-hour training, participants will be able to:
- Deconstruct Masculinity Norms: Describe at least three ways traditional masculinity norms influence men’s help-seeking behavior and unique symptom presentation in counseling, social work, and family therapy settings.
- Enhance Assessments: Identify a minimum of four gender-responsive assessment questions to immediately incorporate into biopsychosocial evaluations with male clients.
- Overcome Ambivalence: Demonstrate two clinical engagement strategies that effectively reduce defensiveness and build a strong therapeutic alliance with men who are ambivalent about therapy.
- Apply Evidence-Informed Interventions: Apply at least three tailored clinical interventions (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, CBT/DBT-informed skills, and relational/systems strategies) optimized for men’s emotional expression, relationships, and societal roles.
- Optimize Practice Environment: Develop one specific change to your own clinical practice or programming (via language, intake processes, or physical environment) to measurably improve access, retention, or outcomes for male clients and their families.
