About this Event
Science or Magic? Artist or Scientist? You decide.
Recommended ages: 6 - 14
What makes ink float on water?
Why does soap make patterns burst and spread?
How can rubbing alcohol change the movement of color?
In this hands-on workshop, children will explore Suminagashi (Japanese paper marbling)—the art of painting on water—while uncovering the science behind it.
Participants will become both artists and scientists, creating marbled artwork while testing real scientific ideas through simple experiments.
Together, we will explore:
• Surface tension — why water behaves like a stretched skin
• How soap and alcohol change the movement of ink
• The Marangoni effect — the force behind spreading patterns
• How scientists make predictions, test ideas, and observe results
As part of the Artist or Scientist? series, this workshop blends creativity with experimentation, showing how art and science work together.
Small class sizes allow for age-appropriate guidance, scientific discussion, and individualized support for all participants (ages 6–14).
Each child will leave with their own hand-marbled artwork and a deeper understanding of the science behind it.
No prior experience needed. All materials provided.
