For 43 years, Lucy Baker helped shape the heart and soul of the Whitewater Normal School, leaving a legacy that has truly stood the test of time. Arriving in 1894 as the institution’s first music instructor, Baker spent her career cultivating a vibrant campus culture where music, education, and student development flourished side by side. She built a strong foundation for the arts, organizing student choirs and ensembles that eventually evolved into a full band, orchestra, and, ultimately, an accredited academic department. But her influence extended well beyond music. As a devoted mentor and advocate, she championed opportunities for women at a time when such support was rare—encouraging leadership, athletic involvement, and personal growth. Baker’s career reflected a deep commitment to the values of progress, inclusion, and perseverance. In 1952, her contributions were formally recognized with the naming of Lucy Baker Hall, ensuring her impact would echo through generations. This presentation explores how her visionary work in both academics and student life continues to inspire—an enduring example of a life that truly stood the test of time.Presented by Jennifer Motszko, Head of Archives & Library Associate Director as part of UW-Whitewater’s Fairhaven Lecture Series “Standing the Test of Time.” More information and full schedule: https://www.uww.edu/ce/fairhaven
