Mellor + Hopkins: A Design Dialogue

As Patron of the Sheffield Design Awards, Corin’s talk marks the beginning of the 2026 award season, and the evening will conclude with the official launch where attendees will hear about this year’s programme, how to enter eligible projects, and the autumn awards ceremony. Corin’s talk perfectly frames the key aspects of SDA’s charity charter, in celebrating the highest quality of buildings and open spaces.

Corin Mellor (Director of David Mellor Design) will speak on his family’s relationship with the architect Sir Michael Hopkins (1935-2023). The Mellor and Hopkins families have a connection deeply rooted in materiality and craftsmanship, which evolved over time through shared values and ways of working. This manifested in the stunning yet functional design of The Round Building, near Hathersage in the Peak District National Park. Framed around this and two other key buildings, the talk explores how considered architecture, materials, and making can shape everyday life, influence creativity, and leave a lasting impact on how people experience the spaces around them.

The venue has step-free access via the yard. The main entrance has one step. You are welcome to secure your bike in the yard. Car parking is available locally both on-street and in multiple car parks. There will be seating and standing room available indoors where the talk will take place.
