11:30 - Lunch (Sponsored by SMRT Architects & Engineers) and business meeting
12:00 - Our presentation, led by SMRT Architects and Engineers, will explore via a case study the unique challenges and strategies involved in expanding a state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility. Specifically, it will address the complexities of integrating updated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems and navigating evolving codes and guidelines that have shifted significantly since the facility’s original construction. Participants will also gain insight into strategies for maintaining operational continuity and minimizing disruptions to patient care during phased construction.
The session will delve into best practices for optimizing spaces for medical infusion and radiation therapy, as well as integrating cutting-edge medical technologies into existing infrastructure. Trends shaping the future of oncology center design, such as the need for flexibility to accommodate emerging treatments and the creation of supportive environments for patients and staff, will also be discussed.
The presentation will conclude with a tour of the Alfond Center for Cancer Care, highlighting the facility’s design features and offering an in-depth look at the strategies guiding its current expansion. This real-world application will provide valuable context for addressing the challenges of healthcare delivery in oncology, with a focus on adapting modern facilities to meet the dynamic demands of patient-centered care.
