The 2026 Alexandria People's Assembly Community African American Studies Series begins by welcoming Historian C.R. Gibbs back to Alexandria.

Sunday July 12th at 2:30pm at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St, Alexandria, VA 22314.

The Alexandria People's Assembly is building community and empowering civic advocacy by prioritizing efforts to disrupt systemic oppression, while fostering a community model of oneness that allows structurally marginalized people to thrive from womb to grave, and from corner to corner across the City of Alexandria and Northern Virginia.
We focus on culturally competent mental health, community education, and civic engagement initiatives to establish just, loving, and sustainable neighborhoods and communities.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments reported Alexandria saw a 14% increase in the homeless population since 2025. Although only 21% of the city population is Black/African American, 71% of Alexandria's current homeless population is Black/African American. That level of over-indexing does not happen without intention.
In 2023, the Alexandria People’s Assembly began calling for an African American Wellness Hub in Northern Virginia to recognize and effectively address systemic racism, the immediate health needs of Black/African people, and disrupt the region's severe socioeconomic health disparities. This community education initiative is part of the Alexandria People's Assembly community-based response.
