About the Book: Liberty Biscuit
LIBERTY BISCUIT is set on a rural farm. To ease her loneliness, 13-year-old Kip longs for a horse of her very own - instead, she winds up with a scraggly, bedraggled one-eyed donkey. There is a gentle theme of inclusion - the family is mixed-race. But that does not define the story. There are peach biscuits, a mystery, and a shocking discovery in the attic of Grandpa's barn. Kip risks the complete unraveling of her family, and ultimately discovers that we don't always get what we want, but when we open our hearts, we might just find what we need.
About the Author: Melanie Sue Bowles
Melanie Sue Bowles was born and raised in Michigan. She moved to Florida in her early 20s where she earned her living as a firefighter/medic. She is also the founder of Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary. In operation for nearly 35 years and one of the most successful, longest existing facilities for at-risk horses in the United States. She is the award winning author of three nonfiction books which were inspired by the 100s of animals that have found peace and freedom at Proud Spirit. More recently, Melanie veered into fiction for kids - or as she prefers to say "for ages 8 to 108." Always certain that she was never meant to live life as a flat-lander, Melanie and her husband now live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Boone, NC along with the sanctuary horses, donkeys, dogs, and cats.
