Meet Beau Dick: Maker of Monsters is a feature length documentary about Canadian art legend Beau Dick. An enigmatic carver from a small, remote village on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia, his remarkable masks have been celebrated across the global art scene—as vibrant expressions of West Coast Indigenous culture, sophisticated objects of contemporary art, and the focal point of the Frye’s exhibition Insatiable Beings.Dick possessed an unprecedented ability to tap into the collective memory of his people and breathe new life into age-old traditions. In Maker of Monsters, filmmakers LaTiesha Fazakas and Natalie Boll explore the forces that made Beau who he was. Like a carver chipping away at a block of wood, the film gradually reveals deeper truths and understanding and illuminates a man whose art and life continue to transcend expectations and boundaries.
Following the screening, join a conversation with his daughter, matriarch Geraldine Dick—featured in the film—alongside director LaTiesha Fazakas and Frye curator Georgia Erger, as they reflect on the profound impact Dick made on his community and the art world at large.
