Medieval Market – Chichester City Council at 800
Step back in time on Saturday 5 September, from 10.00am to 5.00pm and experience the sights, sounds and stories of medieval Chichester at our Medieval Market, taking place around the historic Market Cross and Cathedral Green.
Browse stalls selling traditional goods, including eggs, honey and freshly baked breads, while meeting a host of medieval traders, craftspeople and characters from the past.
Visitors can enjoy a range of interactive demonstrations and activities, including:
- Butter-making workshops
- Medieval spinning and weaving demonstrations
- Felt hat-making demonstrations
- Medieval bread-making workshops featuring authentic period recipes
- A medieval surgeon explaining how wounds and illnesses were treated in the Middle Ages
- A working medieval forge, where a blacksmith will demonstrate traditional metalworking techniques
- A medieval relic seller offering pilgrim badges and reproductions of historic devotional items
- A medieval moneyer showcasing the art of coin-making
For those seeking a little medieval justice, there will even be stocks where you can “punish” your friends and family!
Throughout the day, medieval grave diggers and a medieval ratcatcher will wander among the crowds, bringing history to life.

With hands-on activities, living history demonstrations and entertainment for all ages, the Medieval Market offers a unique opportunity to experience Chichester’s rich heritage as part of the City’s 800th anniversary celebrations.
Tickets are not required to attend. However, we recommend allowing plenty of time to enjoy all the sights, sounds and activities on offer, as this is expected to be a popular event.
