It’s Scott Lewis’ turn to answer the 12 question Mediator Stage Feature Questionnaire! Scott and his band ‘Measured Response’ will be featured at Open Mic Thursday at The Mediator Stage on September 25, 2024! Located at and sponsored by The Mediator Fellowship, 50 Rounds Ave, Providence, RI, 02907. Show starts at 7pm, doors at 6- sign in early if you want to perform!
1. How old were you when you first started playing music?
“I first learned how to play music from my sister after someone in my family won a guitar from Crescent Park in East Providence. I was around 14 years old. From then on, I picked up whatever I could from listening to records.”
2. When did you write your first song?
“I wrote my first song around 2007 but I had been recording music (no lyrics though) for a while before that on a small 4 track studio, and later Pro-Tools.”
3.Who influenced you most musically?
“My influences when I was younger were AC/DC, Rush, Yes, Crosby Stills Nash and Young. As I got older I became more interested in other artists like Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits and more recently, Gillian Welch.”
4.Where were you born?
“I was born in Providence RI and grew up in East Providence, but I've lived in Warwick RI for the past 25 years.”
5. Are you classically trained, self-taught, or somewhere in the middle?
“I am mostly self-taught but I took some music theory when I was very young and took lessons from a guitar player who lived in my neighborhood when I was growing up.”
6. What does The Mediator Stage mean to you?
“I've been involved with The Mediator since around 2008, after I met Don Tassone. I started attending regularly and eventually got more involved. For the past 16 years, Don's been my friend and mentor teaching me a lot about producing the show as well as giving me the confidence to become a better songwriter, so thanks Don! I've also made some great friends over the years. It's been a big part of my life for a long time.”
7.What advice would you give to a younger person starting out in the art of performance, acting, singing and/or songwriting?
“Listen to as many artists across as many genres as you can, it helps you understand what is ‘possible’ in terms of expression, both lyrically and musically. Also, don't shy away from topics you think are ‘overused’ or ‘overrepresented’ in music. Since we all experience life differently, you are probably going to bring something new to a subject you think has already been worn out.”
8.Did you ever have stage fright? And if so, how did you overcome it?
“I usually get a bit jittery before a show, but once things get started I can usually ignore it since I'm concentrating on playing well, but this has gotten better with time and more experience.”
9. Do you have a “Signature Song” (an original tune that you and your supporters can mostly identify you with)?
“Since the formation of my band, Measured Response (Frank Villani-Drums, Chris Tavares-Bass) I would have to say my song ‘Julia I'm Gonna Stay’ is the one most people will recognize. I wrote that song in 2021 and we're still playing it.”
10.What is your Current Best Song, original or cover? The one you enjoy playing most right now? “My newest song is called ‘Dusty Old Heart’ and I think it's my Current Best Song. I also love the way it sounds with the band.”
11.Origional or by someone else, what’s your favorite Song Of Love?
“I always liked ‘I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You’ by Tom Waits, as fleeting as love is in that song.”
12.What’s your favorite Song Of Hate?
“‘Death On Two Legs’ by Queen. That song is just vicious.”
