About this Event
The Women in Research Panel event is the first of its kind to be sponsored by MDPI UK. The panel, hosted by Professor Rachel Cowen, aims to foster connections between women working in research, while providing a dedicated space to share stories and experiences of this demanding yet rewarding career path.
As one of the largest Open Access publishers in the UK, MDPI is committed to encouraging diversity and inclusivity in research. In line with this year’s 2026 International Women’s Day theme, ‘Give to Gain’, this evening aims to amplify the voices, careers and experiences of women working in research and academia in the Northwest. The panel will also explore how institutions, organisations and fellow researchers can better support women in their academic career, whilst giving a space for connection and networking to help strengthen this community.
While participation by women in research, particularly in STEMM, has steadily increased over the last few decades, this progress has been slow to reflect in publication and citation rates. This highlights the underrepresentation of women in scientific fields, and the ongoing barriers women researchers have to make their voices heard and recognised in the research environment and culture.
This event is designed for women who are Early Career Researchers, students, and those navigating careers in research and academia who wish to hear firsthand from women in these research and leadership positions. We hope to highlight the potential pathways and enablers for career progression and how to navigate these challenges, with a dedicated Q&A session.
Join us for an evening of discussion, insight, and connections with our panellists Professor Toni Haastrup, Dr. Amelia Bonea, Dr. Noushin Karimian and Dr. Sarah Woolner.
