Built ca. 1797, the McRaven House in Vicksburg is regarded by many paranormal investigators and enthusiasts as the most haunted home in the entire state! When you hear of the many horrific deaths that would have occurred here over the years, it comes as no surprise that it wields a paranormal aura like no other.
During the Civil War and the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863, it was used as a Confederate field hospital and campsite. A fact that fuels the paranormal theories surrounding the home, with an untold number of soldiers losing their lives on the property.
Following the fall of Vicksburg to Union forces, the then owner, John Bobb, became outraged when he saw a group of 6 Union occupation soldiers picking flowers from his garden. Ordering them to leave at once the soldiers cursed him and refused to leave, so John picked up a brick and threw it at them, knocking a sergeant to the ground.
The soldiers left the property vowing to return and burn it to the ground. Bobb would later pay a visit to the Federal Commander of Vicksburg, Gen. Henry W. Slocum to report the incident, only for the General to dismiss him. Upon Bobb’s return to his home, he was confronted by 25 Union Soldiers who took him to the nearby Stout’s Bayou (about 100 yards from his home) and brutally beat him before fatally shooting him in the back and face.
As well as Bobb’s tragic death on the property, at least 5 previous occupants have been recorded as having died in the home, including the original owner, Andrew Glass – the notorious highwayman.
