Skating was a rare merit badge with only 1,898 earned in 2018 in all of USA. In 2022, Skating was ranked 124 of 138 merit badges earned.
About this Event

#LoneScoutJason aka #EagleScoutJason of #DragonautsCrew333 and #SSSPhoenixDragon333 invites all Scouts BSA to complete requirements for the rare Skating merit badge- and all Venturers to complete requirements for the #SkatingElective for their #RangerAward on the OUTDOORS ICE SKATING RINK in SANTA MONICA.



The Skating merit badge introduces Scouts to the exciting world of ice skating, roller skating, and in-line skating. In addition to being an enjoyable leisure activity that promotes fitness, there are a variety of athletic careers in skating.
ALTHOUGH THERE ARE FOUR options to earn the Skating Merit Badge: Ice Skating, Roller Skating, In-Line Skating, OR Skateboarding - THIS SKATING MERIT BADGE WITH DRAGONAUTS CREW 333 ON JANUARY 4 IS ON FROZEN WATER AKA ICE.



PLEASE READ ALL THE REQUIREMENTS BEFORE YOU SIGN UP:



REQUIREMENT 1a) Explain to your counselor the most likely hazards associated with skating and what you should do to anticipate, help prevent, mitigate, and respond to these hazards.
REQUIREMENT 1b) Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while skating, including concussions, hypothermia, frostbite, lacerations, abrasions, fractures, sprains, blisters, heat-related reactions, and shock.



REQUIREMENT 2A1) Give general safety and courtesy rules for ICE SKATING. Discuss preparations that must be taken when SKATING OUTDOORS ON NATURAL ICE. Explain how to make an ICE RESCUE.
REQUIREMENT 2A2). Discuss the parts and functions of the different types of ICE SKATES.
REQUIREMENT 2A3) Describe the proper way to carry ice skates.
REQUIREMENT 2A4) Describe how to store skates for long periods of time, such as seasonal storage.



REQUIREMENT 2B1) Skate forward at least 40 feet and come to a complete stop. Use either a two-footed snowplow stop or a one-footed snowplow stop.
REQUIREMENT 2B2) After skating forward, glide forward on two feet, then on one foot, first right and then left.
REQUIREMENT 2B3) Starting from a T position, stroke forward around the test area, avoiding the use of toe picks if wearing figure skates,
REQUIREMENT 2C1) Glide backward on two feet for at least two times the skater's height.
REQUIREMENT 2C2) Skate backward for at least 20 feet on two skates.
REQUIREMENT 2C3) After gaining forward speed, glide forward on two feet, making a turn of 180 degrees around a cone, first to the right and then to the left.
REQUIREMENT 2D1) Perform forward crossovers in a figure eight pattern.
REQUIREMENT 2D2) Explain to your counselor the safety considerations for running or participating in an ice skating race.
REQUIREMENT 2D3) Perform a hockey stop.

All Scouts BSA planning to earn this merit badge with #LoneScoutJason aka #EagleScoutJason MUST ALREADY KNOW HOW TO SKATE AT MODERATE SPEED AROUND AN ICE RINK - ESPECIALLY WHEN DEMONSTRATING THEIR PROFICIENCY WITH SNOWPLOW STOPS, CROSSOVERS, AND ICE HOCKEY STOPS.



WHAT IS "MODERATE SPEED"?
AVERAGE ICE HOCKEY PLAYER 10-17 YEARS OLD SKATING SPEED IS 6-15 MPH DURING A GAME.
AVERAGE FIGURE SKATER 11-17 YEARS OLD SKATING SPEED = 3+MPH TO PERFORM JUMPS.
MINIMUM SPEED FOR ICE HOCKEY STOPS = 2-MPH.



PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP IF YOU/YOUR SCOUT CANNOT SKATE AROUND AN ICE RINK NON-STOP FOR 10-LAPS.

NOTES - PLEASE READ:
1) Parking and travel from wherever you are and the venue is your responsibility.



2) Scouts BSA will attend in their Scouts BSA Class A field uniform to check in with #LoneScoutJason and #DragonautsCrew333. Scouts BSA will skate in their SCOUT UNIFORMS (CLASS A).



3A) Venturers will attend in their unit uniform to check in with #DragonautsCrew333. Venturers will skate in their uniforms for the WINTER SPORTS ELECTIVE of the RANGER AWARD.

Winter Sports.

  • REQ #1: Be familiar with cold weather-related injuries and how to avoid and treat them.
  • REQ #2: Know and explain the safety codes for your chosen winter sport - ice skating.
  • REQ #3: Design a 30-day physical fitness and stretching program that will prepare you for your chosen winter sport, including exercising and stretching for at least 30 minutes three times a week for 30 days.
  • REQ #4: Ice Skating
  • A)Participate in at least 10 recreational skating sessions totaling 40 hours.
  • B)On one of your skating trips, demonstrate to the adult skating counselor approved by your Advisor that you are proficient in this sport.
  • C) Give instruction and assistance to a group of beginner skaters.
  • D) Make a tabletop display or presentation for your crew, another crew, a Cub Scout or Boy Scout unit, or another youth group on ice skating.




3B) Venturers who are also registered Scouts BSA can RSVP as Scouts BSA to attend in their Scouts BSA Class A uniform to complete requirements for the Skating Merit Badge.



3C) Venturers who want to complete requirements for the WINTER SPORTS ELECTIVE of the RANGER AWARD must register to attend in their VENTURING UNIT UNIFORM.



4) Cost listed for Scouts BSA and Venturers is for (a) skates rental, (b) rink admission, AND (c) donation to St Jude’s Children Hospital and Friends of Scouting.



5) This is NOT a drop off for any SCOUT BSA 11-17 years old. All Scouts BSA must be accompanied at the maximum ratio of 4-Scouts to 1-adult from the same troop.



6) Only Venturers and Sea Scouts at least 16 years old may be dropped off without a Scouting America adult leader. Sea Scouts and Venturers who are 13-15 years old must have a UNIT LEADER on site throughout the program.



7) SKATING MERIT BADGE COUNSELOR IS A FORMER JUNIOR (12U) ICE HOCKEY PLAYER - WHO NOW ONLY SKATES 1-2X/YEAR CASUALLY FOR FUN DURING WINTER.
