This year marks a significant milestone for Huntingdon Town Council which was established on 1st April 1974. Huntingdon had long been a key administrative centre for Huntingdonshire, with a rich history dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. As the county town, it played a crucial role in regional governance, commerce, and cultural life, which developed into the Borough of Huntingdon and Godmanchester. Following the Local Government Act 1972, this became Huntingdonshire District Council. Huntingdon & Godmanchester Town Council was established in 1974, enabling residents to have a direct say at the most local level. Godmanchester left to form its own Town Council in 1982.
Over the past 50 years, the council has been instrumental in preserving Huntingdon’s historic character while also embracing modernisation and growth. It has overseen numerous projects and improvements, from enhancing local amenities to supporting community events.
