This basic drawing class is perfect for both beginner or intermediate artists who’d like to hone their skills. The class focuses on the development of concepts and elements of drawing: first and foremost, observation, then the compositional basics of line, form, value, texture, and spatial relationships. Sessions are oriented toward developing these fundamental artistic skills, understanding their application and exploring them through the use of various tools and materials. Examples will include learning how to draw still life, landscape, drapery studies and experimental problems. Includes problems of scale and proportion.
Students will need to bring the following supplies:
· Drawing pencils: Since we’re not going to be getting into minute details, no H pencils are necessary. Get a nice set of at least 3 pencils with the softer ‘lead’ (2B, 4B,6B,HB) along with a sharpener.
· Regular eraser: not allowed—forbidden to be used in the class. You’ll learn why. 😊
· Kneaded eraser: You’ll learn why this eraser is allowed.
· Vine Charcoal: a set with varying sizes and hardness.
· Charcoal pencils: One hard, one soft.
· Masking tape: cheapest you can get.
· Drawing pad: 18x24” in size is preferable. 14x17” is the smallest we will go. Strathmore pads are good ($15-25), especially newsprint, your best bet. No matter what kind you buy, it must have a medium to rough drawing surface (smooth paper will not hold charcoal).
· A hard backing surface to support your paper—at least 18x24” in size. You can use any flat board that size without buying a manufactured drawing board, but there is an Artist’s Loft drawing board that has a carrying handle and a clamp on top to hold the paper for only $20.
For certain sessions, as they come up, you’ll also need to buy toilet paper, paper towels, and a couple other cheap props. Make sure within a week of the start of the class to buy an apple.
