It’s huge, it’s hot, it’s dusty, and it’s a blank spot on all but the most die-hard travellers’ maps. The north-western African country of Mauritania is the 11th-largest on the continent, and is nearly all desert. Today it’s one of the few places in the Sahara you can freely and securely explore, and it’s now gotten its first-ever dedicated guidebook in English, published last month by Bradt Travel Guides.
Sean Connolly first visited Africa as a student in 2008 and has been returning to the continent regularly to research, teach, or simply soak up the ambiance in Africa’s countless little-visited corners ever since. He’s been writing with Bradt Travel Guides since 2011, and along with his new guide to Mauritania, has authored and updated guidebooks to more than a dozen countries.
