As a Young Rider, Matt Brown competed through the Advanced level of Three Day Eventing with his Appaloosa Maximum Speed, who was his mount for the North American Young Rider CCI3*-L Championships in 1993.
Matt has been a lifelong student of the sport, studying under some of the most respected and experienced figures of horsemanship and upper level sport, including Derek DiGrazia, Volker Brommann and Denny Emerson. He also credits horseman and rancher George Kahrl for imparting the importance of creating a trusting relationship between horse and rider, even at the top levels of competition. Matt’s abundant natural feel, partnered with George’s teachings in horsemanship and Volker and Derek’s further instruction in classical techniques, have fused to form an integral foundation for the relationships Matt forms with his equine partners as well as his training and teaching philosophies.
October of 2015 marked a milestone for Matt when he was the top-placed US rider at the Boekelo CCIO4* in the Netherlands, as well as a member of the Silver Medal US Nations Cup team there. Boekelo was the highlight of a breakout year for Matt that included being named as an alternate to the Pan American Games team, as well as several top finishes on multiple horses in CCI4*-S and CCI4*-Ls across North America. In 2016, Matt completed his first CCI5* at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event as the highest-placed rookie, and had the honor of being named as a reserve for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games US Eventing Team. In June 2016, Matt was named to the Land Rover US Eventing Team for Aachen CICO4*, where he helped the team secure their 6th place finish in July. In November 2016, Matt and Super Socks BCF won the competitive Ocala Jockey Club International CCI4*-S.
In 2017, Matt finished 6th at the Rolex Kentucky CCI5* with Super Socks BCF and was the USEA Gold Cup Advanced Champion at the American Eventing Championships with BCF Belicoso.
Always seeking to improve, Matt works regularly with his mentors Volker Brommann, Derek di Grazia, and US Eventing Team Coach David O’Connor. Matt also studies extensively in the self-defense art of Kenpo Karate, achieving the rank of Shodan (black belt) in 2000. Matt incorporates the philosophies, body awareness, and balancing techniques that he has learned in the martial arts to enrich his riding and training.
Private sessions available at $185, refund available if clinic is cancelled or if there is a rider to take your spot. Payment due by February 20th to confirm your spot!
