Mathematical Modeling and Animation Contest in Excel
The objective of the competition:
Mathematical modeling is one of the best tools for understanding the mathematical and scientific concepts and is being introduced in class IX in CBSE schools. But many of us fail to learn the art of mathematical modeling due to some or other reasons. Now we are living in a technological age but we are hardly availing any of the advantages of the advancements of technology in learning mathematical and Scientific concepts in general and mathematical modeling in particular.
The main aim of this competition is to re-orient the students and Professionals in this direction so that they can learn the art of using technology in mathematical modeling and strengthen their foundation in the understanding of the fundamental concepts of mathematics and science. I was thinking about the ways to divert the attentions of the learners towards the use of technology to learn mathematical and scientific concepts. Initially I thought I will teach it to large number of people by conducting short duration mathematics workshops but then I realized that it is a slow process and as it is not the part of any academic curriculum people are reluctant to learn.
Then I thought of this competition. It can be a fast process and I believe that it will drive the students towards self-learning and self-discovery.
The mathematical modeling and animation of any mathematical or scientific concepts are to be done using MS Excel spreadsheets. This is to be done without using any coding or programming or using any software. Even the use of macro or VBA of MS Excel is not permitted. This constraints I have created for orienting the participants toward a very easy and effective tool for testing and understanding very complex and difficult mathematical and scientific concepts.
Duration of contest:
In the first mathematical modeling contest it was observed that when we declared the competition then some of the contestants got the information immediately. At the same time many of them got this information very late. So they could not get adequate time to complete the model or got less time to prepare model compared to others.
To avoid this problem this time we have decided that the competition will be divided into two phases:
1) Registration Phase and
2) Modeling Phase.
This time those who want to take part in the competition has to registered first for it. This registration period will be of around 15 days and the competition period will be for seven days. The contest will be opened only after the registration is closed and only the registered person can complete for the contest.
Registration Period is 03.07.2020 @01 pm to 08.8.2020 @10 pm.
Registration fee:
Last time we have kept the entry fee for the students free. As a result of it a large number of students registered for the event but did not submit the solution. So to avoid this problem we have kept nominal registration fees as follows:
Indian Students
Rs 300/-
Foreign Students
Rs 1000/-
Indian Professionals
Rs 1000/-
Foreign Professionals
Rs 3000/-
If we receive less than 20 entries in the registration period then the registration period may be extended or the event may be postponed or even cancelled.
Post-registration Actions:
Once the contestant register for the event they are required to join the google classroom with the code provided in the registration confirmation email. All the details of the contest will be provided in the google classroom Page.
Prizes:
The winner of this content will be awarded an amount of Rs 5000/- with an e-certificate while the other contestants will get the participation e-certificate.
In the last 2D Mathematical Modeling competition we shared the solution with all the contestants and asked their opinions. In this process many contestants with wrong solutions also started raising inappropriate questions and created unnecessary chaos. Based on this observation this time we have decided that we will not entertain any question or will not share the entries to anyone. The decision of the organizers will be final and binding. If more than one correct answer will be received then winner will be declared based one the earliest correct entry submission date.
Contest Period:
The contest will remain open from 8th August 2020 @ 10 pm to 15th August 2020 @ 10 pm at Google Classroom. The code of the google classroom will be shared in the registration confirmation email.
Result:
The result will be declared on 12th December 2025 at @12 am. The contest will open for seven days. During this period the participants are required to submit their entries in google classroom. If there is more than one right answer then the winner will be decided on the priority of the entry submission time.
For all purposes the decisions of organizers are final and binding.
