Maternar-te

Mothering means caring with love, with the ability to establish emotional, affective, and energetic connections. It involves providing education, companionship, protection, food, shelter, and support. It is a relatively new term. Language is always alive, always transforming, and adapting to social changes. 'Mothering' recognizes and celebrates the different ways in which we can embody the role of being a mother.

Maternar-te' is an event created by two mothers and dedicated to those who mother in Miami. It is open to all forms of motherhood and to different stages of the journey. Participants will share an intimate space to exchange stories about our experiences of raising children and caring for loved ones, despite the many challenges that come with nurturing and protecting others today.

Participants will have the opportunity to be vulnerable as they share teas prepared with herbs traditionally used to give love and heal hearts. With the help of artists Gabriela Serra and Maria del Mar, you will create a clay mug that can be used in the future and will serve as reminders of the importance of taking time to sit down and converse with others. In the mugs, guests will engrave poems, haikus, or phrases that reflect the thoughts of each person during the time shared around the act of mothering. (Note: the mugs will be created on site but fired and glazed off-site, so it may take up to four weeks for participants to receive them.)

Participants will begin by gathering at the Nature Center’s entrance before taking a 15-minute mindful walk along the Tequesta Trail. This walk will offer a chance to invite participants to observe, listen, and connect with the Earth—our first mother—who provides everything we need to live.

After the walk, everyone will sit in a circle with each participant receiving a pre-cut piece of clay to work with while sharing and engaging in conversation. Tea will also be brewed and provided as part of the sharing circle activity.

Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. Late arrivals may miss walking portion and join workshop.
