MASSterworks presents Michael Haydn’sMissa tempore Quadragesima
(Music in the time of Pre-Lent)
Friday, February 7th, 2025
7:00 P.M., St. Bernard Church
With Ash Wednesday less than a month away, MASSterworks is proud to offer a beautiful candlelit pre-Lenten First Friday Mass to help us prepare for the coming holy season.
Missa tempore Quadragesima, for four-part choir and organ, draws on the traditions of Gregorian chant, flowing freely from the light and lively Kyrie and Credo to the more somber and reflective Et incarnatus est and Agnus Dei. It is presented, as are all our MASSterworks, in its intended setting, the context of Holy Mass.
The prolific Michael Haydn (1737-1806), though less well-known than his brother Joseph, is most often cited for his many sacred compositions and is said to have influenced a number of compositions by his contemporary W.A. Mozart as well. This Mass was composed in 1794 while Haydn was Director of Music and court Koncertmeister in Saltzburg.
We invite you to join us, along with friends and neighbors, in celebrating this truly memorable First Friday liturgy, sung by our exceptional choir, in the best traditions of our holy Church.
