HOLY THURSDAY: The Triduum is like a great opera with liturgies that are like acts. These liturgies unfold over the course of three days. The first of the three days is Holy Thursday. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper commemorates the institution of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, so the empty tabernacle reminds us of the newness of this Covenant, and that there was a time before this new reality. Things remain somewhat stark in the sanctuary and church, as well as in the music. It is a day when we recall not just the institution of the Holy Mass, but also the institution of the New Testament priesthood.
And at the end of Mass, our church tabernacle will remain empty as, again, a sober sign. Our Lord is about to be arrested and taken from us. There will be no Mass on Friday or Saturday morning, so the parish will consecrate enough hosts on Holy Thursday to carry us through until Saturday night.
After Mass, all will be encouraged to accompany the Blessed Sacrament to an altar of repose. Here at Mary Our Queen, our altar of repose will remain open in St. Joseph's Hall for adoration for one hour after Mass, in imitation of the holy hour that was spent in prayer by our Lord in his Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. For those who stay to pray, it will place us in the garden with our Lord. Then suddenly, and without solemnity, the Blessed Sacrament will be removed to remind us of our Lord’s arrest in the garden. Then the Paschal fast begins.
