“Mass Mob LXII” will be Sunday, June 14th (11:30am Mass) at NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA. Located at: 2100 West 12 Mile Rd., Royal Oak, MI 48073. National Shrine of the Little Flower parish is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The current church basilica was built between 1930 and 1936, in two stages. The church is designed in a very rare ecclesiastical “Art Deco” with Gothic influences. The structure was designed by noted architect Henry J. McGill, of the New York firm of Hamlin and McGill.
“A dramatic limestone Art Deco tower called the ‘Charity Crucifixion Tower’, completed in 1931, features integrated figural sculptures by Rene Paul Chambellan, including a large figure of Christ on the cross, 28 ft high on the Woodward Avenue façade.”
“The main building is granite and limestone, with exterior and elaborate interior sculptural work by Corrado Parducci, including a lectern and Stations of the Cross, and hand-painted murals by Beatrice Wilczynski. Set into the exterior walls are stones carved with the names and official flowers of each of the states.”
What is a Basilica? On Jan. 31, 2014, Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron announced that the Holy Father, (then) Pope Francis, granted the title of Minor Basilica to the National Shrine of the Little Flower Church. Shrine is the second church in Michigan to be made a minor basilica (St. Anne de Detroit is the other) and the 82nd in the United States. The title of “Major” Basilica is reserved for churches in Rome only.
Please join us on June 14th at the 11:30am Mass to show love for this historic basilica and parish. The beauty of this church is amazing to behold; you won't be disappointed.
God Bless, and “we’ll see ya in church...”
