About this Event
We invite teens and adults to come, discuss and learn about multiracial identities within politics and society. Recent attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris's racial identity have prompted MASC to advocate for and emphasize once again a multiracial person’s right to identify with any of the racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds that make up one's heritage. As mixed individuals, our experience is unique from being identified solely as any one background. We understand that many of us, like Vice President Harris, have been questioned about or have faced challenges to our mixed racial identity. This is a harmful experience that many multiracial people have faced. We invite you to share your experiences and perspectives on this subject. We'll also explore societal perceptions about mixed race identities and how the history of racial classifications in the U.S. has led to terminology, such as mulatto and octoroon, being applied to the mixed race community that is now considered out of date, out of touch and to many, problematic and offensive. Let's come together to engage in this important conversation, share and honor our multiracial heritages, listen and learn from one another, and find strength in our common experiences as a multiracial community.
Disclaimer: MASC in a non-partisan organization and we do not endorse any political candidates. Any opinions expressed during this discussion are those of the individual and not of MASC.
