The late MaryAnn Black was a State Representative and Associate Vice President for Community Relations for the Duke University Health System. The Distinguished Health Equity Symposium honors Black for her extraordinary leadership, enduring impact, and powerful advocacy across our community.

The MAB Distinguished Health Equity Symposium reinforces Duke’s longstanding history and unwavering commitment to meaningful community engagement, by working collaboratively with communities in our backyard to understand and address the root causes of health disparities. MaryAnn embodied the spirit of transcending silos by collaborating with anyone, anywhere, to find solutions to meet the needs of our community. MaryAnn also personified a strong sense of institutional pride; her work on behalf of Duke University with Durham, surrounding communities, North Carolina State legislature, Chamber of Commerce, and numerous other entities is a shared legacy and inspirational roadmap for Duke’s commitment to excellence in advancing health equity over the next century.

The MAB Distinguished Health Equity Symposium will include a lecture from Senator Natalie Murdock, a research poster session, and a dinner.

About the Speaker

Senator Natalie Murdock is the NC State Senator for District 20, which encompasses Durham and Chatham Counties. A native North Carolinian, UNC alum, and local elected official, she has spent a lifetime learning about the strengths and challenges of North Carolina and committed her life to public service. She was the first woman of color under 40 to be elected to the NCGA and was elected in 2020 earning over 100,000 votes. She is dedicated to pursuing a progressive agenda that will transform the lives of hardworking North Carolinians. She hit the ground running as a freshman senator, filing over 100 bills that range from supporting black maternal health, expanding healthcare access for ALL to providing greater access to the ballot.

Join us for a riveting dialogue with Senator Murdock about the current and future cancer health landscape and the legacy of MaryAnn Black.

Abstracts

We are very excited to invite individuals from the community conducting work that exemplifies the legacy of MaryAnn Black to submit an abstract for presentation during the Poster Symposium! The goal is to highlight exceptional work that advances health equity in our community. Submissions from students/trainees, community organizations, researchers, and healthcare professionals are welcome.

Abstracts relevant to at least one of the following may be submitted:

• Youth-led work to advance health equity
• Policy work to advance community health and reduce disparities
• Community health work to reduce the burden of disease
