Mary Jane and host Jill McConkey will discuss Montour’s unjustly neglected classic and - in honour of Montour, who loved to write and loved when editors read his writing - talk about the tricky, funny, awkward ins and outs of a successful author-editor relationship. A book signing will follow.
This event will be hosted live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park and also available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/qsNucIPVSNs
Enos Montour’s Brown Tom’s Schooldays, self-published in 1985, tells the story of a young boy’s life at residential school. Drawn from Montour’s first-hand experiences at Mount Elgin Indian Residential School between 1910 and 1915, the book is an ironic play on “the school novel,” namely 1857’s Tom Brown’s Schooldays by Thomas Hughes. An accomplished literary text, this critical edition offers important insight into Canadian residential school histories.
Mary Jane Logan McCallum is Professor of History and Canada Research Chair at the University of Winnipeg. She studies and teaches modern Indigenous history, especially First Nations health, education, labour, and social history.
