This event begins with the showing for the first time of a 20-minute documentary following the extraordinary journey of acclaimed sculptor Keith Barrett as he creates a permanent bronze memorial honouring Mary Ann Macham, one of North Tyneside's most remarkable, yet once overlooked, historical figures.
There will then be the opportunity for the audience to ask questions which will be answered by Keith Barrett and filmmaker Dan Prince and a panel of esteemed historians.
Dan Prince, co-founder of Local Heroes, which creates engagement projects that bring people together through shared stories and experiences, said: “Escaping slavery in Virginia, USA, and finding freedom in North Shields, Mary Ann Macham's story is one of resilience, courage and hope. Through sculpture, history and community, this film uncovers the life of a woman whose remarkable journey deserves to be remembered.
“Filmed over three years, we witness every stage of the creative process, from rough timber to chainsaw carving and bronze casting to the finished memorial, while exploring the historical research that shaped the sculpture and the powerful symbolism behind it.
“More than the story of a sculpture, this is an intimate portrait of an artist at work and a moving reflection on identity, freedom, remembrance and legacy.”
Old Low Light centre director Guy Moody said: “We are pleased to be working with Local Heroes and it is fitting that it is taking place during Black History Month. We were very proud to highlight the courageous story of Mary Ann Macham and were delighted when Keith was commissioned to create the sculpture. We hope by keeping the story alive, that one day we will be able to find out more about Mary Ann’s life, both in Virginia and in North Shields.”
