Marvin Messing, painter, sculptor
1922 - 2014
Marvin “Skeez” Messing taught art at FVCC from 1997-1009. He
attended the Art Institute of Chicago, but left his studies in 1942 to
enlist in the Navy’s Construction Battalion during WWII. His artistic
skills qualified him for covert intelligence missions on Japanese-held
islands in the South Pacific. Messing’s records at the Art Institute are still marked “CLASSIFIED.”
The long shadow of his war experiences deeply influenced his art. His works are charged with emotion and raise social, political and spiritual questions. He was fascinated by the paradox of man’s nature: divine yet savage; compassionate yet heartless. His works are a poignant reflection on the enduring impact of war on the individual and society.
