In a career stretching back over 40 years, alto saxophonist Martin Speake has been a major contributor to the UK jazz scene and beyond, performing with artists and projects as diverse as Itchy Fingers, Loose Tubes, Stan Tracey, Bhavani Shankar, Django Bates, Bob Wilber, Conrad Herwig, Don Weller, Dharambir Singh and Sarvar Sabri, Ronan Guilfoyle, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, Jim Mullen, and Julian Arguelles.
Martin has 23 albums released under his own name, including the 2006 album Change of Heart released on the ECM label to international acclaim with Paul Motion, Bobo Stenson and Mick Hutton. Other releases include Intention on Ubuntu Records with Ethan Iverson as well as a number on his own Pumpkin Records label – most recently his duet album Nothing Said with tenor saxophonist Alyson Cawley, released earlier this year.
Martin’s an old friend of the club and we’ve been pleased to host a number of his quartet projects in recent years; however this evening he’ll be putting the house trio through their paces with his selection of favourite standards and some self-penned compositions.
